Rain, Nor Snow, Nor Wind, Nor Rocks Pahrump, Nevada - The Los Angeles Sheriff's Deputies Off-Road Race Team drove their 2000 Ford Ranger 4X4 truck through the toughest conditions Nevada and mother nature could toss at them and finished second, mere minutes behind the eventual winner of the Terribles Town 250. This race was the first and one of the toughest races in the 2001 Best In The Desert Racing Association's "Silver State Series". The starting and finish line for the race was in the town of Pahrump, Nevada, which is about 1 hour north of Las Vegas. The race course was a single loop that covered 262 miles and took the racers as far north as the small town of Beatty, before coming back to Pahrump. This course has the reputation among the racers as one of the toughest because of the extremely rough, rocky and silty terrain. Mother nature decided to add to the difficulty by throwing rain, wind and even some snow at the racers. The Deputies started third out of six trucks in their class. The starting interval was 1 minute, and at the 10 mile mark, the Deputies were already in the physical lead by about 1 minute. After some close racing with two other trucks in their class, the Deputies rear shock guards began to give in to the constant beating by all the rocks on the course. This only caused the deputies to slow down slightly as they passed the 1/2 way mark and pulled into the pit at mile 148 for fuel and a driver change. After the pit stop, the Deputies were never more than a minute or two down on the leader as they pushed on to the finish line. At the finish line, the Deputies were only a few minutes behind the winning truck of Rob MacCachren and Steve Olliges, also in a Ford Ranger. The Deputies would like to thank the following sponsors for all their help in keeping their program up and running: Ford Motor Co., Ford Powertrain Engineering, BFGoodrich tires and pit support, Bilstein, National Spring Co., ROUSH Industries, Spirit Racing, Cruise America R.V.
